PLEASE READ THESE TERMS AND CONDITIONS CAREFULLY BEFORE USING THIS SITE (BEIS Alumni Platform)


What's in these terms?

These terms tell the Users of the Site (‘You’) the rules for using the BEIS Alumni Site (‘Site’). 


Who we are?

The BEIS Alumni Site is managed and controlled by the Department for Business, Energy & Industrial Strategy (BEIS). In these terms BEIS is also referred to as ‘We’ or ‘Our’ or ‘Us’.

Goals and objectives of the Site

The goal of the Site is to provide a channel that will allow BEIS to continuously engage and interact with our ex-employees.

The objectives of the Site are:

  • To provide a great source of networking and bring together ex-BEIS employees, allowing reconnection with past colleagues.
  • To keep ex-BEIS employees informed on what is happening in BEIS
  • To provide a central channel for ex-BEIS employees to share their experiences, achievements and career journeys.


Using BEIS Alumni Site

You must register before you use the Site.

By using our Site, you confirm that You accept these terms of use and that You agree to comply with them. If You do not agree to these terms, You must not use Our Site and your registration to use Our Site will not be accepted

We recommend that You print a copy of these terms for future reference.

You agree to use the Site only for lawful purposes. You must also use it in a way that does not infringe the rights of, or restrict or inhibit the use and enjoyment of this Site by anyone else.

We may update the Site from time to time. We can change or remove content at any time without notice.

We may update and change the Site and/or the content on the Site from time to time to reflect changes to our visions, our users' needs and our business priorities.


Acceptable Use

Use of the Site is permitted and encouraged where such use supports the goals and objectives of the Site. 

By agreeing to use this Site You must ensure that you:

  • comply with current laws and legislation
  • use the Site in an acceptable way
  • do not create unnecessary risks to BEIS or the Site by your misuse of the content of this Site


Unacceptable Use

The following is deemed unacceptable use or behaviours:

  • Use obscene, hateful, and otherwise illegal material, comments and content in the Site.
  • Using the Site to perpetrate any form of fraud or piracy; in any way that is unlawful or fraudulent or has any unlawful or fraudulent purpose or effect.
  • Using the Site to send offensive or harassing material or comments to BEIS staff (past and current) or other users.
  • Publishing defamatory and/or knowingly false material about BEIS, the Site, BEIS staff (past and current) or other users.
  • Revealing confidential or personal information about BEIS, their staff (past and/or current) or other users - including financial information and information relating to our customers, business plans and/or policies. 
  • Introducing any form of malicious software or transmit any data, send or upload any material that contains viruses, Trojan horses, worms, time-bombs, keystroke loggers, spyware, adware or any other harmful programs or similar computer code designed to adversely affect the operation of any computer software or hardware into the Site network.
  • Use the Site in any way that breaches any applicable local, national or international law or regulation.
  • For the purpose of harming or attempting to harm minors in any way.
  • To bully, insult, intimidate or humiliate any person.
  • To send, knowingly receive, upload, download, use or re-use any material which does not comply with our acceptable use for the Site
  • To transmit, or procure the sending of, any unsolicited or unauthorised advertising or promotional material or any other form of similar solicitation (spam).
  • To upload terrorist content.


You also agree:

  • Not to reproduce, duplicate, copy or re-sell any part of our site in contravention of the provisions of our terms of website use.
  • Not to access without authority, interfere with, damage or disrupt:
    • any part of our site;
    • any equipment or network on which our site is stored;
    • any software used in the provision of our site; or
    • any equipment or network or software owned or used by any third party.


Use of the Content on the Site

BEIS is the owner of this Site, and the material published on it. Those works are protected by copyright laws and all rights are reserved.

You may reproduce a piece of content from our Site by printing off a copy and/or downloading a copy but only for your personal use.

You must not modify the reproduced copies of any piece of content you have printed off or downloaded in any way, and You must not use any illustrations, photographs, video or audio sequences or any graphics separately from any accompanying text.

You must not use any part of the content on our site for commercial purposes without obtaining a licence to do so from Us

If You print off, copy, or download any part of our site in breach of these terms of use, your right to use Our Site will cease immediately and you must, at Our option, return or destroy any copies of the materials you have made.

Please contact Us if you want to reproduce a piece of content but are not sure if it is covered by copyright laws/licences. 

How we may use your personal data

We will only use your personal information as set out in our Privacy Notice and Cookie Policy.

Site Suspension and/or withdrawal

Our Site is made available free of charge to all users

We do not guarantee that Our Site, or any content on it, will always be available or be uninterrupted. We may suspend or withdraw or restrict the availability of all or any part of our site for business and operational reasons. We will try to give you reasonable notice of any suspension or withdrawal.

You are also responsible for ensuring that all persons who access our Site through your internet connection are aware of these terms of use and other applicable terms and conditions, and that they comply with them.


Keeping your Account/Profile Safe

If You choose, or You are provided with, a user identification code, password, or any other piece of information as part of our security procedures, You must treat such information as confidential. You must not disclose it to any third party.

We have the right to disable any user identification code or password, whether chosen by you or allocated by us, at any time, if in our reasonable opinion you have failed to comply with any of the provisions of these terms of use.

If You know, or suspect, that someone else knows your user identification code or password, you must promptly notify us at beisalumninetwork@beis.gov.uk


Information about you and your visit to BEIS Alumni Site

We collect information about you in accordance with our Privacy Notice and the Cookie Policy. By using the Site, you agree to us collecting this information and confirm that any data you provide is accurate.


Cyber/Virus Protection

We make every effort to check and test the Site for viruses at every stage of production. You must make sure that the way you use BEIS Alumni Site does not expose you to the risk of viruses, malicious computer code or other forms of interference which can damage your computer system.

You are responsible for configuring your information technology, computer programmes and platform to access our site. You should use your own virus protection software.”

We’re not responsible for any loss, disruption or damage to your data or computer system that might happen when you use BEIS Alumni Site.


Viruses, hacking and other misuse

When using the Site, You must not introduce viruses, trojans, worms, logic bombs or any other material that’s malicious or technologically harmful.

You must not try to gain unauthorised access to the Site, the server on which it’s stored, or any server, computer or database connected to it.

You must not attack the Site in any way. This includes denial-of-service attacks.

We will report any attacks or attempts to gain unauthorised access to the Site to the relevant law enforcement authorities and share information about you with them.


Request to remove content

You can ask for content to be removed from the Site. We will remove content:

  • in order to comply with data protection legislation covering the rights and freedoms of individuals
  • if it breaches copyright laws, contains sensitive personal data or material that may be considered obscene or defamatory

Contact us to ask for content to be removed. You will need to send us the web address (URL) of the content and explain why you think it should be removed. We will reply to let you know whether we will remove it.

We remove content at our discretion. You can still request information under the Freedom of Information Act and the Data Protection Act.

We make most of the content on the Site available through feeds for other BEIS websites, channels and applications. We do not give any guarantees, conditions or warranties, whether express or implied, about the accuracy or completeness of any content of other websites that are linked to or from the Site. 

While we make every effort to keep the BEIS Alumni Site up to date, we do not provide any guarantees, conditions, or warranties, whether express or implied, that the information will be completely current and complete. 

Losses or Damages

We are not liable for any loss or damage that may come from using the Site. This includes:

  • any loss or damage caused by civil wrongs 
  • the inability to use BEIS Alumni Site and any websites that are linked to or from it
  • the use of any websites that are linked to or from BEIS Alumni Site

This applies if the loss or damage was foreseeable, arose in the normal course of things or you advised us that it might happen. This includes (but is not limited to) the loss of your:

  • salary, benefits, or other payments

  • opportunity
  • anticipated savings

  • tangible property

  • death or personal injury arising from our negligence
  • fraudulent misrepresentation
  • any other liability which cannot be excluded or limited under applicable law


Users Generated Content

This Site may include information and materials uploaded by other users of the site, including in the sub-groups and chat rooms. This information and these materials have not been verified or approved by Us. The views expressed by other users on Our site do not represent Our views or values.

If You wish to complain about content or materials uploaded or posted by other users, please contact Us.



Governing Law

These terms and conditions are governed by and construed in accordance with the laws of England and Wales.

Any dispute You have which relates to these terms and conditions, or your use of BEIS Alumni Site (whether it be contractual or non-contractual), will be subject to the exclusive jurisdiction of the courts of England  and Wales.


General Notice

We might decide not to exercise or enforce any right available to us under these terms and conditions. We can always decide to exercise or enforce that right at a later date.

Doing this once will not mean we automatically waive the right on any other occasion.

If any of these terms and conditions are held to be invalid, unenforceable, or illegal for any reason, the remaining terms and conditions will still apply.


Changes to these Terms and Conditions

Please check these terms and conditions regularly. We can update them at any time without notice.

You are deemed to agree to any changes if You continue to use the Site after the terms and conditions have been updated. You may be notified of any change to the terms and conditions of this Site
